Cambridge is the county seat of Dorchester County and its largest municipality, with a population of about 13,100 on the south bank of the Choptank River. Settled in 1684, Cambridge became Maryland's second-largest port after Baltimore, shipping seafood, produce, and canned goods worldwide through deepwater facilities completed in 1964. The Phillips Packing Company once made Cambridge a major food-processing center, supplying military rations during both World Wars before the plant's eventual closure reshaped the local economy. Today Cambridge blends a recovering downtown, supported by a Main Street revitalization program, with a diversified economic base spanning food processing, light manufacturing, healthcare, and tourism. The Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort, opened in 2002 on the waterfront, anchors a growing hospitality sector, while J.M. Clayton Seafood and Choptank Oyster Company continue the town's long seafood tradition. Cambridge is also home to University of Maryland Shore Medical Center, the region's largest healthcare employer, and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's Horn Point Laboratory, giving the town a research and environmental-science presence alongside its historic working waterfront.
