Oxford is one of Maryland's oldest towns, founded in 1683 as one of only two official ports of entry for the entire colony, the other being Annapolis. With a population of around 700 and a median age in the mid-60s, Oxford today is a quiet, tree-lined waterfront village bounded by the Tred Avon River and Town Creek. The town's economy centers on yachting, boatbuilding, and hospitality, anchored by working boatyards like Cutts & Case and the historic Robert Morris Inn. Sailboats fill the harbor much of the year, and the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry, established in 1683 and believed to be the oldest privately operated ferry still running in the United States, continues to connect the town to St. Michaels and the rest of Bay Hundred. A handful of restaurants, an ice cream shop, and small specialty retailers serve both year-round residents and visiting boaters. Oxford's economy is small in scale but steady, built on its enduring appeal as one of the Chesapeake's most preserved maritime communities.
